Diabetes Drug may reduce brain damage after a stroke. In a study in mice scientist at karolinska institute in sweden have discoved a potentiol therapy that may reduce brain damage following a stroke. The drug is already aproved for type 2 diabetes patients. Firstly what is a stroke and how is it caused? A stroke is when part of the neural tissue in the brain is damaged due to lack of oxyogen delievery, either caused by a blood clot or ruptured blood vessel. People with diabetes are already at a higher risk then the average population The only other therapy currently available is thrombosis which is only available for ten perecnet of stroke patients. The chemical substance at the basis of this finding is called linagliptin. In thier study scientists administered linagliptin to diabetic mice before and after having an induced stroke. The results showed that linagliptin is able to stimulate neuroprotection and largely reduce the brain damafe following a stroke independent of its glucose lowering effects.
